ELDEN RING is a collaboration between George R.R. Martin, New York Times best-selling author of Game of Thrones, and Hidetaka Miyazaki, creator of the DARK SOULS video game series.

For Elden Ring, FromSoftware (Dark Souls developer) teams up with the fantasy writer George R. R. Martin. This article will give you information on the upcoming game.

This Elden Ring guide will give you:

  • What the plot is based on
  • What playing it will feel like
  • When it is coming out
  • What George Martin contributed

Elden Ring is the next major project by Hidetaka Miyazaki — the man behind Dark Souls. The mood of the first teaser conveys a similarly sinister atmosphere. This game will change role-playing genres on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

In this overview, we will inform you when you can wait for it to come out and some general information.

1. Release Date and Platforms

No fixed release date is yet to be revealed. However, some say the time is Tuesday, June 30, 2020. That is not completely absurd, as large titles usually hit the stores on the weekday.

Other sources say the game will be released in April 2020. The only thing certain at the moment is the action role-playing game is made for PC, PS4, and Xbox One — unfortunately, Nintendo Switch owners will not get their hands on Elden Ring.

2. The Story

Not much was given away about the plot yet. The first trailer gives an insight into the sinister world and states that the eponymous Elden Ring has been destroyed. Miyazaki insists, however, the ring is not a mere accessory, but a mysterious, world-defining concept.

The developer deliberately keeps it vague and leaves a lot of room for interpretation. The first artwork shows the story is also about the ambition of mankind. However, it stands to reason that Elden Ring will also rely on a narrative story and have an actual plot — just like in Bloodborne or Dark Souls.

The only question that remains pertains to how cryptic the narrative continues to be. With Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, FromSoftware has recently shown that it can also tell a hell of a story.

3. George RR Martin’s Contribution to Elden Ring

What is certain, however, is that the game will offer extensive lore. That is where George Martin comes into play — he is responsible for all background stories and thus for the setting.

Fantasy writer George R. R. Martin invented the past of the Elden Ring world.

FromSoftware builds on this to tell a further story. So Martin can let off steam creatively and, simultaneously, does not restrict himself because of the primary plot.

The collaboration came about because the studio admired the author’s work. So the developers tried to get in touch with Martin — even if he had no initial desire for collaboration. Later, the tables flipped, and the novelist was enthusiastic about the ideas. Together they built the world of Elden Ring from the ground up.

4. Playing Mechanics

Elden Ring has similar mechanics to the Souls series, but it will also set new accents. The biggest change is probably the open world. Instead of wandering through a huge maze of locations, the game allows you to go wherever you want.

In addition to the combat mechanics, Elden Ring will also inherit other strengths from the Souls series. You can stumble upon castles and palaces, which allow for a little more linear gaming approach, but exploration will be an important element too. And, of course, bosses are waiting everywhere, and they are no less formidable than the bad guys you’ve gotten to know from the Dark Souls games.

After Sekiro, FromSoftware turns back to RPGs. It means that you can create and customize your own character again. Additionally, you are no longer pinned down to a very specific style of play and can choose it yourself.

You will be able to eliminate opponents and bosses in close combat with swords, but also in long-range with magic. According to a Reddit thread, you can lose your arms if they burn. You should then be able to use new limbs you get from enemies. With an altar, you should be able to restore your own.

How to fight is clear — against whom remains ambiguous.

Additionally, bosses leave forces with which you can unlock closed paths in the style of The Legend of Zelda. However, the latest information should still be taken with a grain of salt, as it has not been officially confirmed or denied.

5. Is There a Multiplayer Mode?

Since the Dark Souls is also known for its multiplayer or co-op modes, it is reasonable to expect they will also appear in Elden Ring. However, you won’t find any confirmed info about whether you can plunge into the open world with other players.
